Second Temple Judaism: Sects, Institutions, and Messianic Expectations
From Cyrus to Titus: Pharisees, Sadducees, Herodian Monumentality, and the Roman Matrix
Second Temple Judaism spans the historical era from the decree of Cyrus (538 BC) to the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus (70 AD), providing the crucial religious, political, and cultural matrix in which Jesus ministered and the early Church was born.
From Cyrus the Great to the Destruction of the Temple
The Second Temple era opened with Cyrus the Great's edict in 538 BC permitting Jewish exiles to rebuild the Temple ( Ezra 1 ). The period witnessed Persian hegemony, Alexander the Great's conquest, Seleucid oppression under Antiochus IV Epiphanes provoking the Maccabean Revolt, Hasmonean independence, Roman conquest under Pompey (63 BC), Herod the Great's client kingdom, and catastrophic destruction in 70 AD.
Sectarian Movements: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and Zealots
Josephus describes four major Jewish movements: 1. Pharisees (popular teachers emphasizing oral Torah , daily holiness, and bodily resurrection); 2. Sadducees (aristocratic priestly elite adhering strictly to the written Pentateuch and denying resurrection); 3. Essenes (monastic separatists awaiting divine cosmic victory); and 4. Zealots (militant nationalists resisting Roman taxation).
Temple Cultus, Synagogues, and Messianic Fervor
Jewish religious life centered on the monumental Herodian Temple (sacrificial cultus, national pilgrimage festivals) and local synagogues ( Torah study, communal prayer, social welfare). Roman oppression ignited intense, diverse messianic expectations: a conquering Son of David , an eschatological High Priest , a Prophet like Moses , or the transcendent Son of Man.
