Levitical Priesthood & High Priests
Lineage from Levi and Aaron through Eleazar, Phinehas, Zadok, and Ezra
Set apart from the tribe of Levi , the priestly house of Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar ministered at the Tabernacle and Temple, while Levitical divisions led by Kohath , Gershon , and Merari —including Temple musicians Asaph , Heman , and Ethan —led Israel 's worship.
Covenant of Perpetual Priesthood: Aaron, Eleazar, and Phinehas
Following the death of Nadab and Abihu ( Numbers 3:2 ), the high priesthood passed from Aaron to Eleazar and his son Phinehas , to whom God granted a covenant of perpetual priesthood ( Numbers 25:11 , 1 Chronicles 6:50 ). Their line continued through Zadok (in the reign of David and Solomon , 1 Chronicles 6:8 ), Hilkiah (in the reign of Josiah , 1 Chronicles 6:13 ), Seraiah , Jehozadak (carried into exile by Nebuchadnezzar, 1 Chronicles 6:15 ), Joshua the high priest ( Haggai 1:1 ), and Ezra the scribe ( Ezra 7:1 ).
