Major & Minor Prophets of Israel
Prophetic Oracles, Covenant Faithfulness, and Messianic Expectations
Spanning the eighth to fifth centuries BCE, the Major Prophets ( Isaiah , Jeremiah , Ezekiel , Daniel ) and the Twelve Minor Prophets ( Hosea through Malachi ) called Israel and Judah back to covenant righteousness while foretelling redemption and the coming Messiah.
Pre-Exilic Prophets: Isaiah, Hosea, Amos, and Micah
Ministering in Jerusalem during the reigns of Uzziah , Jotham , Ahaz , and Hezekiah ( Isaiah 1:1 ), Isaiah proclaimed the holiness of God and Messianic prophecies of Immanuel and the Suffering Servant ( Isaiah 7:14 , Isaiah 9:6 , Isaiah 53:1 ), while Micah foretold Bethlehem Ephrathah as the birthplace of Israel 's ruler ( Micah 5:2 ).
Exilic & Post-Exilic Prophets: Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Haggai, and Zechariah
Jeremiah warned Jerusalem prior to the Babylonian siege and promised a New Covenant ( Jeremiah 31:31 ). Among the exiles in Babylon , Ezekiel beheld visions of the glory of the Lord and a restored sanctuary ( Ezekiel 1:1 , Ezekiel 40:1 ), and Daniel interpreted kingdoms and apocalyptic visions ( Daniel 7:13 ). After the return, Haggai and Zechariah encouraged Zerubbabel and Joshua the high priest to complete the Second Temple ( Haggai 1:1 , Zechariah 4:6 ).
