Belgic Confession (1561 AD)

Doctrinal standard of Continental Reformed churches written by martyr Guido de Bres

The Belgic Confession (*Confession de Foy*) was authored in 1561 by Reformed pastor Guido de Bres and smuggled to King Philip II of Spain to demonstrate that the persecuted Protestants of the Low Countries were not rebellious Anabaptist radicals, but law-abiding biblical Christians confessing the historic apostolic faith.

Geographical Center: Doornik (Tournai), Southern Netherlands (Belgium) Historical Catalyst: Spanish Inquisition persecution in the Low Countries

Historical Context & Significance

De Bres was hanged for his faith at Valenciennes in 1567, but his 37-article confession was adopted by the Synods of Antwerp (1566) and Dort (1618–1619) as the oldest of the Three Forms of Unity.
