Alexander Campbell

Premier intellectual leader of the Restoration Movement, editor of The Christian System

Alexander Campbell was the foremost intellectual architect, debater, and editor of the Restoration Movement. Educated at the University of Glasgow, he edited *The Christian Baptist* (1823–1830) and *The Millennial Harbinger* (1830–1864), authored *The Christian System*, founded Bethany College, and defended Christian theism and the primitive gospel in famous public debates with secularist Robert Owen (1829) and Catholic Bishop John Purcell (1837).

Geographical Center: Bethany, Virginia (West Virginia)

Historical Context & Significance

Campbell formulated the distinct dispensational division of biblical history (Patriarchal, Jewish, and Christian ages) and systematized the 'Ancient Order of Things': immersion of believers for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38), weekly Lord's Supper, autonomous elder governance, and the rejection of clerical titles and human creeds.
