Origen of Alexandria

Towering biblical scholar, author of the Hexapla, and speculative theologian

Origen was arguably the most prolific and brilliant biblical scholar of antiquity, producing the six-column Hexapla comparison of Old Testament texts, systematic commentaries across virtually the entire Bible, *Contra Celsum*, and the first systematic Christian theology, *De Principiis* (On First Principles).

Geographical Center: Alexandria, Caesarea Maritima

Historical Context & Significance

Tortured in the Decian persecution and dying in Tyre, Origen taught the threefold sense of Scripture (literal/body, moral/soul, spiritual/spirit). Certain speculative hypotheses (pre-existence of souls, apokatastasis / universal restoration) generated centuries of controversy culminating in condemnation at Constantinople II in 553 AD.
